This year we have had the privilege of using the all-new Yamaha Kodiak 450 on all of our hunting adventures. While it might sit squarely in the mid-size category, it has more than enough grit and capability to tackle any large-scale job. From coyotes to deer, elk and antelope, this compact ATV took us over and through rough terrain that seemed incapable of passage and carried all of our gear, plus us, with ease.
It runs off a new direct-injection 421cc liquid-cooled engine that is cushioned by rubber mounts to reduce vibration. Furthermore, the Kodiak 450 sits on an independent double wishbone suspension giving the rider comfort even when traversing precarious terrain and its On-Command® selectable 2WD or 4WD, with just a push of a button, provides confidence in even the most challenging situations. The Kodiak 450’s Ultramatic transmission applies constant belt tension which translates to smooth take offs and all wheel engine braking.
The Yamaha Kodiak 450 is super nimble at a mere 80.1 inches in length and only has a width of 46.5 inches and has a comfortable total height of 45.7 inches. That being said, its low key compact size is in no way constraining for larger framed riders, as we both stand near six feet tall and around 215Ibs in weight, and we found it to be more than accommodating and comfortable during all day trips.
A notable feature worth pointing out, as well, is the all-new Yamaha Kodiak 450’s work ethic. Its cargo racks can handle a whopping 264Ibs combined and it can shoulder towing a massive 1,322Ibs load. That’s more than enough muscle to lug around several big game animals of any size and you won’t even see it break a sweat.
Sure, for all of the Kodiak 450’s technological advances and mind-blowing capabilities, one would assume that its price tag is just as daunting as the terrain it can tackle. But that’s not the case. Just as eager as this Kodiak is to please its rider, Yamaha was determined to provide back country enthusiasts with the world’s most competent mid-sized ATV at an extraordinarily low price, and that’s exactly what they did. You can throw your leg over a Yamaha Kodiak 450 and begin an all-new adventure today for a starting price of $5,999.
