The design is simple, there aren’t 25 buttons and a 600-page manual required to operate this training collar. Instead, a rocker switch on the side controls the levels of stimulation or tone and a one button on the front is pressed to dispatch the desired stimulation. An LCD screen on the remote displays in large numbers what stimulation level your rocker switch is currently set at and also shows the battery life of the remote. And when it comes to battery life, both the collar and remote hold a long charge and have rechargeable batteries for when you finally run it down. An included cord simply plugs in to each of the units separately and recharges them, no buying batteries. Furthermore, the waterproof collar keeps this charging unit sealed off so even if it’s fully submerged while your dog trains in a body of water or while you’re sitting in the rain it’s safe and won’t be affected. More importantly, your dog won’t be affected, either.
The meat and potatoes of this system is the collar itself that has a 400-yard range. The transmitter is turned on with a small black button on the back side of the device and an audible beep as well as quick red green flash will let you know that the unit is on. The unit comes with two different length contact points, so you can customize the collar to the dog that will be using it – one with thick fur may require longer contact points while short hair may not. The collar is sized to accommodate a wide variety of neck sizes, 8.5 inches to 25 inches, with pre-punched holes. The collar needs to fit snuggly, so the contact points actually touch the skin, and can deliver the electric stimulus that you dictate by pressing the button on the remote.
A training collar is meant to help you train your dog by correcting behaviors with the help of an electric pulse and the Cabela’s Gun Dog GS-4000 Training Collar does exactly that in a very simple, but effective to use, unit. If you have a hunting dog that is already highly trained, and you don’t think that this unit or its companions the GS-8000 or GS-9000 are necessary, I would urge you to think about the benefit it could have in hunting scenarios where dogs are out on long retrieves, beyond earshot. A training collar like this still allows you to have some sort of contact with your dog even at a distance. A quick pulse or tone can get your dog’s attention and help you maintain control or more importantly help you keep your K-9 safe.
What about those electric pulses? There are 15 levels of stimulation and I tested each and every one on myself. In general, I have a rule with my kids and this extends to my dogs as well that I will never subject them to something that I myself am not willing to endure. So, when this collar showed up at my door I had my wife charge it and that night while we were watching a little television I strapped that sucker on my arm and gave it a whirl. The levels of stimulation are pretty diverse and let me tell you 15 is legit. Different dogs are going to respond differently to stimulation, so this range is very necessary. For instance, once my Basset Hound finds a smell he wants to follow it’s hard to break his attention and have him pick his head back up. Delivering just one pulse at a level 2 or 3 is enough to do just that, make him forget the trail for a second and look back at me for commands. My highly aggressive, super intense Border Collie is another story entirely. His favorite thing to do is chase livestock, or the feral cats that roam our place. When he has his mind on a job, that intense focus is hard to break. Depending on his level of focus and intensity it may take a level 6 – 10 pulse to effectively grab his attention again. You know your dog, and you will be able to see immediately if they react to the pulse you deliver, and you can adjust accordingly.
