The Revolution knows that you work hard for your money and that testing new hunting and fishing gear in the lobby of your local Cabela's just doesn’t cut it when it comes time to drop some coin. So Jim, Trav and Mrs. Bunny, each week, put the industry's best new outdoor products to the test as they rank them in their Buy or Bust segment. They aren't in to cheap gimmicks, they don't care about what's sexy, they just want dependable gear at reasonable price and nothing else.
There are a lot of different ways to gut an animal, everyone has their own method. What doesn’t change is the fact that there will be blood and entrails. Field dressing is a little messy, that’s just the nature of the beast, after all you are opening an animal up and removing the entrails. However, the process as a whole shouldn’t be a sloppy wreck. Keeping things as clean as possible is important, you don’t want to introduce bacteria into the cavity of your animal. You also shouldn’t be covered head to toe in blood – it’s not only unnecessary but it’s not sanitary, either. In many cases, when we get an animal on the ground we field dress it on the spot. That means that you don’t have immediate access to water and soap to clean up. So, it’s important to stay as clean as possible.
I’m a lot of things, but an expert when it comes to putting a super sharp edge on a knife, I am not. So once I dull a knife I have three choices: use it anyway, buy a new one, or find a way to sharpen it. Now, I could take all my knifes to Cabela’s where they offer knife sharpening services. However, I could also take the guess work out of it and pick up an electric sharpener so I have a way to quickly, easily and effectively, put an edge back on my dull knives.
If fast food has taught me anything, it’s not that it makes you fat, but rather good things come in combos. Do you want to make that burger a combo and get fries and a drink with it? You’re dang right I do! Nobody regrets getting the combo, it’s delicious. So, this week on Buy or Bust I have a combo to share with y’all, and while it doesn’t come with ketchup and fries it will surely help you put meat on the table.
What is the most important piece of hunting gear you own?
Tough call, right? Is it the weapon you are using, or maybe the cartridge or arrow you’ll be shooting that will actually make contact with the animal you are hunting? Maybe your optics - binoculars, rifle scopes, spotting scopes, rangefinders - are your most valued piece(s) of hunting gear. There is a lot of equipment out there that can aid you in being a better and more effective hunter. Something that is often overlooked though, is footwear.
Hunting seasons have arrived and hunters, like myself, are pumped to restock and get fresh meat in the freezer. At the grocery store, meats are purchased by the pound, but when hunting and procuring our own protein from nature’s grocery store, we rarely know exactly how much meat we end up with. That’s why having a scale that you can weigh your animals and final meat haul on is so helpful. Enter the Cabela’s 880-lb. Digital Scale available at Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops. On this installment of Buy or Bust we’re looking at this scale, one that I picked up this year and can’t wait to put to the test.
I don’t know that anyone really looks forward to gun cleaning, but it’s a necessity. Having all your gun cleaning gear in the same place makes it more convenient, and that’s exactly what we’re talking about this week on Buy or Bust. The Cabela’s Shooters/Range Case is a portable case 22” long, 14 ¼” wide and 11 ½ inches high. On the inside you can keep all of your essential shooting and cleaning accessories and tools, store them and organize them.
Protecting your rifle while you travel is important. The investment you make in a firearm and the optics sitting atop it deserve some consideration. On this installment of Buy or Bust we’re looking at a soft sided gun case.
I’m a pretty adventurous guy, but there is one place that I refuse to go, one place I don’t want to explore – my wife’s purse. I refer to it as “the dungeon”, you just never know what’s going to come crawling out of the depths. You might pull out a pack of gum or you might lose a finger trying to find the keys. I don’t like clutter, I like everything to have its place, so a bag of junk is off-putting to me. Everything I carry, can fit in my pockets. However, there is one exception to this rule. No, I don’t have a “man purse”, I have my hunting pack. If you are going to be in the field for hours or even days, there are certain items you need to bring a long, things that just won’t fit in your pockets. This is where I breakdown and use a bag – a hunting pack! This time on Buy or Bust we’re looking at my personal pack, the Cabela’s Elite Scout Pack. Let’s do a quick overview.
Put a price on your hearing, what’s it worth to you? Hunters and shooters know the risks of firing their guns without hearing protection, yet many still do because they forget their ear plugs or find them to be a hassle. While sound canceling is a good thing, it can also be limiting making it difficult to carry a conversation and giving shooters yet another reason to opt out. Hearing protection may seem trivial to some, but it’s crucial. Hearing loss and damage can’t be reversed, so taking the proper precautions now can save you in the future.
Buying the right hunting boot is about like being tasked with finding a suitable woman to marry in a matter of moments. If you get suckered by the store clerk, the shiny display or the pretty girl/new shoe smell and make a rash call and select a poor choice for either a wife or boot, you’ll be left with blisters, less cash and a bad taste in your mouth. Sounds like an afternoon with my mother-in-law.
