While people know that Michael tags big deer and loves busting thunderchickens, a lot of people probably aren’t too familiar with his history. Michael dives right in and talks about Booger Bottom and the significance of this area to him. While Booger Bottom is his home, Michael says that the show “Booger Bottom USA” isn’t specific to just Georgia where he lives. Rather, Booger Bottom is representative of every small town, backwoods, rural area across the country. No matter where life takes you, Michael says that at some point you return to your roots and really begin to understand how special it is to be surrounded by friends and family and this new show really celebrates that. The cast is entirely made up of the people in Michael’s life, his inner circle – his wife, kids, extended family, employees and friends, which he admits can be chaotic and stressful, but also fun and comedic. Furthermore, highlighting his success over the years, Michael says “Booger Bottom USA” also shows that you can be “as country as a chicken coop”, not have a college education, but still have opportunities and the chance to succeed. Not a typical hunting show, this is a departure from what viewers are used to seeing Michael Waddell do and as he puts it, it gives people a look under the hood at his family and his life.
With a strong foothold in the industry, Michael says that he is genuinely appreciative of the success he has found through the years and that success continues to humble him, not change him. He explains how blessed he feels to have the opportunities he does, especially those promoting the outdoors and the hunting/fishing lifestyle. Michael says his life is like a documentary of success and failure all in one. He’s made plenty mistakes along the way, but when looking at the full picture he emphasizes how doing what he loves, working hard and maintaining his passion, has pulled him through it all to find success. He points to his modest beginnings as a teenager winning a couple of turkey calling competitions and how he used that platform to launch the career he ultimately has now. If a small-town guy from Georgia can make it happen, Michael says that it stands to show that working hard and sticking to it can be a winning strategy for anyone.
A dad to five kids, much of what Michael does now is very much a family ordeal. He talks about the bonds that he has created with his kids over hunting and how they get excited about the simple things like hunting with their dad. Getting kids involved in the outdoors is something that Michael has been preaching for a long time, something that is not only fun to see but important as well. Talking about the footprint he hopes to leave on the industry, Michael says he would like to think that he will be remembered for his efforts to recruit and inspire a new wave a hunters, young or old. He wants to be more than the guy that shot a monster buck or took a turkey at only two yards, instead he wants to show people how fun and fantastic this lifestyle is and advocate for the continued participation of hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Michael highlights the ways in which hunting seems to break down barriers and unite people, putting other differences aside, the outdoors has a way of helping people find common ground. At the end of the day, that’s what he wants his legacy to be about – inspiring others to get outdoors, showcasing what a great lifestyle it is and uniting people through this passion.
