Up until three years ago, Jana didn’t hunt much with muzzleloaders. Admittedly, she was a little intimidated thinking they were complicated, had too many components and were difficult to maintain. Furthermore, nobody had ever really introduced her to muzzleloaders or debunked any of those fears until she met up with someone at Thompson Center who was willing to show her the ropes. Since then, Jana has mastered muzzleloader hunting and she joins The Revolution this week to talk about her black powder successes this season.
Fresh off of a hunt in Kansas, Jana says it’s one of the most fun hunts she has ever been on. Kansas is known for producing big deer and her hunt didn’t disappoint. Jana notes that late season hunting can be tough with rutting activity over so food sources take center stage. Sitting in a treestand with her muzzleloader locked and loaded, Jana scored a fantastic 8x7 whitetail loaded with extra stickers at the bases, taking it at 180 yards. Jana says Jim Kinsey, executive producer of Skull Bound TV, also found success but not without extending his trip by a few days and filling his tag on the final day. In the end, Jim took a whitetail at 249 yards with a muzzleloader, which highlights the effective range of today’s modern muzzleloaders. Muzzleloaders can really reach out there, Jana says, and with practice they are every bit as reliable as a rifle. Plus, she highlights how muzzleloader hunting can extend your traditional hunting season.
Heading to Colorado for a mule deer hunt, Jana brought the Thompson Center Encore along, her first muzzleloader hunt with open sights where she was ultimately able to tag a buck at 130 yards. She also talks about a fun coyote hunt where she dropped a coyote at 103 yards with open sights, as well. Listen in as Jana Waller, host of Skull Bound TV on Sportsman Channel joins us to talk muzzleloaders and encourages others who haven’t gotten their feet wet yet, to dive in. Jana says she just didn’t realize how easy it was.
