He talks about taking his young daughter turkey hunting last spring, a hunt that was documented and airs this year on Become 1 in an episode called “Moment”. He highlights how the blind was instrumental in that situation, his daughter’s first successful turkey hunt.
When it comes to calls both Tom and Nick say they prefer diaphragm calls because of the control they have over them. Plus, the hands off and movement free approach you have with a diaphragm call rather than a box or slate call can be an advantage under the prying eyes of wary spring gobblers. Drawing from the title of their show, “Become 1”, the guys dive a little deeper into that meaning and how it applies afield explaining that as a hunter your success is directly related to your ability to become one with the animals you pursue and the terrain you cover. Turkeys may have small brains, but they are very wary birds, so you have to be on your game. In order to outsmart them the guys say that a hunter has to be able to become one with their quarry vocally and also with woodsmanship.
There are a lot of different turkey decoys on the market for hunters today, but Tom and Nick say they keep it simple using just a jake and a hen in order to get as many birds to come in to the decoys as possible. Because they focus on high quality cinematography in their show, the guys say that any time they can film turkeys up close it makes for better footage for the show. And in the realm of filming hunts, the guys know what they’re doing, both with backgrounds in television and production. In addition to doing “Become 1”, they are also outdoor video educators. Understanding that there are a lot of people out there who want to be able to film and document their own hunts for either personal or professional use, Tom and Nick draw from their years of experience and offer classes and courses to help. Online classes, on-site courses and Hunt/Learn/Compete events, the guys take an active approach in teaching others how to capture a hunt on film and turn it into a quality story and final product.
