Hunting Nebraska, Montana and South Dakota in a seven day whirlwind, Melissa says she traveled a lot of miles and didn’t sleep much but the result of all of her hard work was tagging 4 great bucks. Although she had been hunting hard all fall, putting in the time and effort in the field, Melissa says sometimes it all just comes together in a very short timeframe. She talks about shooting a nice mule deer in the Nebraska Sandhills, rattling in a whitetail in Montana, and taking both a rifle and archery buck in South Dakota. Melissa says the highlight of this action packed week was the archery whitetail she took, a 9-point buck she had been working hard in the off-season and throughout the fall to get a chance at. After investing a lot of time in the field pursuing this buck, and putting in a lot of hard work to draw him in, Melissa says it finally culminated in a 56-yard shot that dropped him.
When it comes to rifle hunting, Melissa says the Winchester 350 Legend is impressive. After using it on several hunts of her own, Melissa dishes on the benefits of this relatively new cartridge. She says the 350 Legend is the fastest straight-walled cartridge in the world and if you are a hunter whose shot range is generally 250 yards or less, this is the ultimate caliber. Melissa says the recoil is less than a .243 and when suppressed it further reduces making it feel like you are shooting a .22. Even though it’s light on recoil, it offers serious knockdown power and Melissa notes that she was able to take a Montana buck completely off its feet with this round. It’s like a modern day 30-30, she says. In addition, this cartridge speaks to hunters who live in states with rifle restrictions giving them another option over slugs and it’s also great for kids or shooters who have a hard time handling a rifle with more recoil.
Finally, Melissa caps things off with some fun ideas for getting kids outdoors over the holiday break and throughout the winter. She’ll talk coyote hunting, ice fishing and late season deer hunting and ways to make it more fun for kids.
