If you haven’t seen “VooDoo Crew”, you need to catch the next episode. The Crew of VooDoo Fishing Charters is made up of an outstanding group of captains that are great personalities, expert anglers and guides and awesome entertainers. No day on the water is the same, some are great others not so much. Trey says that the days that they are able to go out and catch a bunch of fish, those are the easy days. However, it’s the days where the fishing is tough when his captains really have to give it more than 100% for their customers. Not only do they have to find the fish, but they also are very invested in entertaining their customers and making sure they enjoy themselves.
Trey says that fishing near the offshore oil rigs plays a huge part in what they do. Those rigs act as artificial reefs and have their own ecosystem. They hold bait fish and other fish and the VooDoo Fishing Charters captains use these locales to their advantage. Different times of the year mean targeting different areas. Trey says in the fall they spend a good amount of time following shrimpers as they drag. When they pull their nets up and empty them out it attracts a lot of fish and the perfect opportunity to cash in on that action. Although there is a long list of different species customers can target like snapper, grouper, blue marlin, swordfish, tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo and more, Trey says the bulk of their customers are after tuna. With Venice known as “Tuna Town”, it’s no surprise that people want to get in on the action. Tuna provides some incredible action; however, Trey says most people aren't prepared for just how hard these fish will fight and as a guide it’s up to them to help customers navigate that kind of experience and hopefully help them get the fish to the boat.
Establishing VooDoo Fishing Charters in 2007 and growing it to one of the largest charter businesses in Venice has been an interesting road. Trey says in high school it was his dream to be a guide. After graduation he worked construction for a while, went on to college and was going down the path to obtain a law degree. However, after doing some deckhanding for local captains, the itch to guide came back. Trey says he got his feet wet working for other guides, getting a feel for the business side and learning a lot about fishing. After working for others for a while he purchased his first boat and ran it for a couple of years, upgraded that boat and ran if for a while. As his business grew, so did his fleet and team of captains. Today, VooDoo Fishing Charters runs 6 offshore boats, they also do inshore fishing, offer lodging and even duck hunting in the winter. Looking for a way to separate his business from the rest and move it to the next level, Trey says “VooDoo Crew” was born out of a collaboration with Brian “Pigman” Quaca. This fast paced and fun show will whet your appetite and have you pining for some serious offshore fishing action.
