Over the last 4 to 5 years, Terry says they have been dedicating a lot of their time to developing and fine tuning their DeerCast app. The app is designed to provide a customized forecast of deer movement in a hunter's specific area. The algorithm that is used to determine the deer movement forecast, or "DeerCast", is based around the Drury's identified 13 phases of the whitetail season, as well as several other influencers like weather factors, moon phases and more. The DeerCast app can provide hunters with day-to-day or even hour-to-hour breakdowns of the likelihood of deer activity in the field. The algorithm is far from arbitrary, Terry says the DeerCast app and its ability to predict deer movement is the result of an extensive amount of time that he and Mark have spent in the field observing whitetails and the factors that impacted their movement or willingness to get on their feet and move during daylight hours. They were able to compile all of that information, correlate it to the 13 phases they've identified, apply it according to phase and put it into a format that can be used by anyone, anywhere.
Maximizing a hunter's time afield, that's really what this app was created for, Terry says. Because the world moves at such a fast pace today, it can be hard for many people to block out a lot of time for hunting. The app makes it a little bit easier for people to decide the most advantageous times to get out and hunt. The app doesn't tell a person when to go hunting, Terry says, but rather predicts the likelihood that deer will be on their feet moving with the current conditions. Of course there are variables that can't be controlled like barking dogs, ATV's in the woods and more, however the app can tell you when the best chances are of seeing deer up and walking during legal shooting hours. It's predicting those optimum hunting opportunities that the Drury's are trying to perfect.
Terry notes that he and Mark have been involved in the outdoor industry for many years and over that course of time a lot has changed. Archery, firearms, ammunition, clothing and hunting gear in general is constantly improving and advancing. The only thing that remains the same, he says, is that everything changes and the ability to roll with those changes is important. Technology plays a big role in those changes and it's his hope that with their DeerCast app they can help channel evolving technology into an easy to use form that can help hunters optimize their time afield and increase their chances of success by taking into account important influencers and providing the most accurate predictors of deer movement possible.
