Jared says that turkey hunting products are something that they are constantly working on at Federal, pushing to make better performing products available to hunters. Last year Federal revamped their turkey offerings, bringing new loads to the market with incredible performance benefits. The three families – Grand Slam, 3rd Degree and HEAVEYWEIGHT TSS – will no doubt be responsible for putting a lot of beards on the ground this spring. Jared talks about each of these families and what they have to offer.
- The Grand Slam is a load comprised of high-quality copper-plated lead pellets available in 10-gauge, 12-gauge and 20-gauge offerings. Jared says the Grand Slam has the capability of extending your lethal range in the field. Using the well-known FLITECONTROL FLEX wad system, that so many are already familiar with from the Black Cloud line, the rear opening and controlled release payload gives shooters dense patterns and a 10-yard buffer on standard shotshells effectively extending your range. Jared says this can be especially helpful when you have a bird hang up a little outside your desired range, the Grand Slam gives hunters the comfort to take the shot based on the high performing potential and capability of this load. The Grand Slam is also really affordable. Most hunters are willing to spend a little more to get better performance from their shotshells, however you get the best of both worlds with 12-gauge Grand Slam offerings coming in between $15 and $25, depending on the shot size for a box of 10.
- HEAVYWEIGHT TSS is exactly what it sounds like, a heavy-duty bird duster. Jared says that Federal brought HEAVYWEIGHT TSS (Tungsten Super Shot) to the market in 2018 and were the first major ammo company to do so. In short, HEAVYWEIGHT TSS is incredibly dense and heavy – 22 percent denser than standard tungsten and 56 percent denser than lead. What does that mean? Jared says if you are getting a No. 9 size pellet, it weighs just as much as a #5 size pellet, plus it hits just as hard as a No. 5. This also allows Federal to pack nearly twice the number of pellets inside your payload. The high density of the HEAVYWEIGHT TSS also helps extend your range because the pellets maintain their energy longer while in flight effectively making them fly farther, and upon impact, penetrate deeper. Jared says that the development of HEAVEYWEIGHT TSS has been pretty amazing, seeing shot densities of up to 90% at 40-yards. There aren’t too many critters out there that can survive the wrath of that many pellets and that dense of a pattern and if your shotgun is loaded with HEAVYWEIGHT TSS from Federal, Jared says there is almost no excuse for missing anymore.
- 3rd Degree with HEAVYWEIGHT TSS uses the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad system to deliver full and consistent patterns. This particular load uses a three-stage payload of No. 5 copper-plated lead, No. 6 FLITESTOPPER lead as well as No. 7 HEAVYWEIGHT TSS. Jared says the blended shot column provides a well-balanced pattern that make it possible to hit your target from a variety of distances with different types of pellets. Shooters will be less likely to miss close range turkeys and more than able to knock down birds in the 40-50 yard range.
Now, if you’re trying to decide what the perfect load for you is this spring turkey season and you’d like to try one of the HEAVYWEIGHT TSS offerings but you’re not sure whether you should be going with the HEAVYWEIGHT TSS or the 3rd Degree HEAVYWEIGHT TSS, Jared has a few things for you to consider. He says the 3rd Degree is going to be a little better for close range shots. Because it doesn’t have as much density in the pattern, you won’t be blowing heads off and if you hit a little low you won’t put as many pellets inside the bird. The 5-6-7 you get with the 3rd Degree load truly does offer a lot of flexibility in that way.
If you aren’t familiar with the aforementioned FLITECONTROL FLEX wad system, it’s something you should get to know. Federal’s FLITECONTROL wad was developed more than 10 years ago with their Black Cloud line. Jared says the whole idea is that the dense and thick wad holds the pellets tighter inside the wad column as it’s exiting the barrel and helps the pellets travel a little further downrange before full separation. Updating this technology, Federal introduced the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad system to address some performance problems with ported chokes that didn’t put enough forward air pressure on the shot column and as a result wads would occasionally tip while in flight leading to undesirable patterns. So, the FLITECONTROL FLEX wad system uses a rear braking system, rather than a forward braking system, and that allows the wad to separate cleanly from the shot column and deliver very tight and consistent patterns through every kind of choke out there.
