What is the Tremor? Well, to be clear, it has nothing to do with the awesomely-bad early 90’s movie with Kevin Bacon, other than the fact that I’m quite certain that a Ford Super Duty equipped with the Tremor Off Road Package could devour rocks and traverse rugged earth and terrain like those ugly, crazy, worm monsters did.
Tom Somerville, Super Duty Brand Manager at Ford Motor Company, joins The Revolution this week to pull back the curtain on the incredible new Tremor Off-Road Package that will afford drivers the ability to transition from work to adventure flawlessly, taking people further into the backcountry than they’ve previously been able to go in a vehicle. Many off-road enthusiasts purchase a vehicle and immediately begin outfitting it with aftermarket parts and accessories making it more off-road ready. The Tremor Off-Road Package makes those after-market changes unnecessary by outfitting the 2020 Super Duty with those features, straight from the factory.
So what does this Tremor Off-Road Package offer? First things first, enormous tires for blazing new trails. Tom says that the huge 35-inch tires, the largest diameter tires fitted to any heavy-duty pickup, are aggressive, maximum-traction Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on 18-inch matte-finished black wheels. Not only do the tires provide excellent traction in off-road terrain, but they also give way to additional ground clearance and the best approach and departure angles of any Super Duty, ever. In total the Tremor boasts 10.4 inches of ground clearance. Tom says these features also allow the Tremor to stand out in a unique way, offering best-in-class water fording at 33 inches. Thinking about driving your truck through that backwoods mud bog? The Tremor has your back!
A locking rear differential with electronic shift-on-the-fly engagement and a new Dana® limited-slip front differential are also stand out features. Depending on what mode is engaged, the front axle can actually detect when a tire doesn’t have traction and send power to the wheel that does. Tom says that the software and tech involved with Tremor Off-Road Package are hugely beneficial and will give consumers maximum traction in off-road situations.
“Rock-Crawl” and “Trail Control” features will no doubt be valuable tools for off-roaders, as well. Ford is making it easier for drivers to navigate tricky terrain, without a spotter, and instead using technology. Rock crawl holds the transmission in second gear and limits top speed to 15 mph. In this mode, the front camera is also activated so drivers have a picture of what is in front of and underneath them, making navigating tricky, rocky or otherwise rough terrain easier to traverse on your own. The Trail Control feature, Tom says, is basically an off-road version of cruise control that allows drivers to set a speed up to 20 mph, adjustable in ½ mph increments. Because drivers don’t have to focus on the gas and break, they can instead focus on steering. It’s these kinds of features as well as other ground breaking technology that make the lives of consumers easier, and that’s what Ford wanted to achieve.
The Tremor Off-Road Package is available on XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum trim levels of F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks with either the all-new 7.3-liter gas V8 or third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine. Wheels, tires, shocks, trail control, rock crawl, skid plates - all of those functional components come standard with the Tremor and while it doesn’t bring any changes to the cabin configuration set-up, Tom says that consumers still have the same power of choice that allows them to select the ideal seating configuration for them.
Tom says the Tremor is a functional package that is meant to improve the off-road capability of the truck, but doesn’t take away from its work performance on the road. It still maintains significant tow and hauling capabilities and while it rides higher thanks to those sky high 35” tires, it is still amazingly composed on highway or off, with or without a load. With 19-million miles of testing, Ford has really put the 2020 Super Duty through the paces and the Tremor is sure to impress.
While many off-road style vehicles aren’t known for their smooth ride, the 2020 Super Duty with Tremor Off-Road package bucks the norm. Drivers get the smooth ride, quiet cabin and plush finishes that the Super Duty offers, but pairs that sophisticated cabin with an extremely capable off-road package. You really see the difference in how Ford builds their heavy duty trucks, Tom says. These trucks have as much brain as the do brawn - refinement, technology, power, capability and more, all wrapped up in a package that is fun and enjoyable to drive.
The Tremor - it’s like a semi-submersible, rock devouring, terrain crushing, mega load hauling beast that can more than handle virtually any off-road situation, but still has all the polish to escort you to a black tie event. It balances the need for serious work performance with the grit required for demanding off-road situations, flawlessly. It’s likely the closest you’ll come to ever driving a monster-truck. The Tremor off-road package will be available when the 2020 Super Duty launches later this year.
