STEP ONE If you’re in the water, get out immediately if you can. If your boat has capsized, attempt to right it, and then crawl back inside and bail out the water.
STEP TWO Work together when you’re stranded with a group in the water. Cling together for shared warmth. Face inward, hold on tightly, and tread water to conserve heat.
STEP THREE If you’re wearing a life vest, assume the heat escape lessening posture (HELP) by drawing your legs up, folding your arms across your chest, and keeping your face out of the water.
STEP FOUR Don’t try to swim, since that circulates cold water around your body and reduces core temperature.
