Chasing down every animal you see is fine, however, you lose a lot of time and run yourself ragged hiking the backcountry when your eyes can do the leg work for you. Spotting scopes are ideal for long range, lengthy glassing sessions. Dean says that Swarovski’s BTX Eyepiece makes glassing even easier by allowing hunters to use both eyes, instead of one. It’s like having binoculars on your spotting scope. He’ll highlight the advantages to this modular setup.
Regardless of where you are hunting, good optics are important to all hunters. However, needs change based on the terrain you are hunting and the distance of your shots. What works for a hunter pursuing deer in thick timber is different from a hunter chasing elk in wide open country. In general though, Dean says that most people have a “bigger is better” kind of philosophy when it comes to optics and magnification. However, overpowering yourself can be a mistake and what you thought you’d gain in performance actually hinders you. Dean says that overall, he prefers 10x binoculars. They are great walking optics, easy to quickly throw up and acquire the image you are looking at. 10x binoculars are very versatile and work well anywhere in the country, coast to coast. When you start moving up in magnification, you have to be prepared. When you’re holding a pair of 15x56 binoculars you’ll become painfully aware of how unsteady you really are - every wobble or shake will be amplified making it harder to see with clarity. If you are spending long periods of time glassing this can become fatiguing on your eyes and really uncomfortable. Dean says for those who need that extra magnification, he would recommend getting a tripod to stabilize their optics as they glass. As for riflescopes, there is never a one size fits all kind of solution, however Dean says that his go to pick is the Swarovski Z8i 2-16x50. He says that he can cover a lot of ground with this scope and leans on custom turrets to really dial in his setup.
Finally, Dean will highlight what’s happening this season on “Swarovski Optik Quests” and talk about how they are trying to highlight different experiences. Dean says there are a lot of places that enable hunters to chase game, but also bring their families along for a broader experience and they want to showcase that. Be sure to listen in as Dean Capuano, host of “Swarovski Optik Quests” talks optics and western hunting.
