With months of social distancing, stay at home orders, isolation and cabin fever, it's likely that the woods are going to be filled with hunters ready to get outdoors this fall. Everyone wants to travel and do some hunting, Joe says, and many of those hunters are looking to the West. Although many states have already sold out of various non-resident hunting tags, there are still over-the-counter (OTC) opportunities available to those who didn't apply for, or draw tags, for this hunting season. Joe says now is a crucial time as many states will soon be opening up sales for leftover or reissued tags, and those tags go fast! The window is small, so make sure you contact the state to find out if and when those opportunities become available. With an increased interest in hunting this year, the competition to get these tags will likely be heightened.
A western hunter himself, Joe calls Montana home and notes that it is a dream location with pristine elk country as well as excellent opportunities to hunt deer, antelope, bear, moose, sheep and goat, not to mention world class fishing. Of all the species to pursue in Montana, Joe says he is "sheep guy", noting they are hard to hunt and live in places that are difficult to get to. It's that challenge that puts sheep at the top of his list, as well as the meat being second to none.
Finally, Joe discusses his new role as associate editor of Petersen's Hunting Magazine and how he hopes to increase the reach of the magazine through online, social media and other platforms.
