What is the best catfish for eating? While monster catfish are fun to lip, they don't make the best meal. Instead, small catfish with nice, white, smooth flesh hit all the right marks for the dinner table. In search of these dinner quality cats, CatDaddy is drifting the river, searching for big brush piles that accumulate around bridge pilings. It's in these areas that he is pulling in two to five pound baby blues that just can't be beat.
The American dream, especially that of outdoor lovers, is to own their own chunk of ground. Some people want to relocate and live on that property, others want to use it for recreation, while some want strict hunting only properties. Every buyer is different, however, what most buyers have in common is the initial sticker shock that comes with looking at purchasing property. In fact, the amount of zeros behind that asking price can often be enough for people to think land ownership is not an option for them. However, it's more affordable and achievable than most people realize.
Deer, more specifically whitetail deer, are the nation's most popular big game animal. Millions of Americans pound the dirt each fall in their personal pursuit of filling tags, freezers and trophy walls. For hunters, deer season is an extended holiday that's worthy of celebrating. Lucky for those hunters, Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel recognize this unofficial holiday each year with #DeerWeek, a primetime programming event that features wall to wall deer hunting action for a week straight. In its fourth year now, the #DeerWeek event will kick off September 14th and run through September 20th, starting each night at 7:00 pm ET to Midnight. Hosting this year's #DeerWeek event will be country music star Tyler Farr, alongside Jeff Danker of "BuckVentures".
The flathead bite has been hot the last couple of weeks for CatDaddy of CatDaddy's Catfishin' Adventures out of eastern Kansas. A surge of high water brought with it some monster flatheads and the opportunity to hook and release those river hogs. Listen in as CatDaddy talks about the ebb and flow of fishing action with the rise and fall of water levels.
So you want to kill hogs with more consistency and success? Listen in to The Revolution this week as the bacon ambassador, Brian "Pigman" Quaca, host of "Pigman: the Series" on Sportsman Channel, Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET, joins the show to talk baiting tactics to bring in more boars.
Baiting is likely the most effective way for average hunters to consistently kill hogs. Yes, helicopter hunting provides the ultimate edge, but that kind of hunting isn't accessible or practical for the masses. And sure you can spot and stalk hogs, and Pigman has taken many that way, however it's not as efficient. In a spot and stalk situation it's all about the terrain and being able to get into an area and get close to the hogs without blowing them out, which is almost impossible. You don't just randomly walk up on a hog, Pigman says, you have to be certain they are in a particular area, get the wind in your favor and then use stealth to sneak in and make your stalk. If you want to kill hogs with any kind of consistent success, bait is a tool you want in your arsenal. Establishing a good bait site conditions hogs to come in frequently and from there, hunters can build their strategy around their bait site. Trail cameras play a crucial role for Pigman and could also be a game changer for other hog hunters that are looking to fine tune their tactics. Pigman says that cellular trail cameras, like those from Covert Scouting Cameras, give him valuable, updated information that helps him determine what time of day the hogs are coming in, if there are more at first light or last light, what the temperature is, what the wind direction is, what direction the hogs are coming from as a result of the conditions and more. This information allows him to narrow down the window of the most optimum time to get afield instead of wasting time on long sits that aren't productive. When it comes to what bait to use, there are a lot of different options. For the most part, hogs will eat just about anything, Pigman says, and he has seen just about everything used for bait and attractant over the years. His own personal mix is one that has a very strong and foul odor. He uses this particular mix for reasons that most people wouldn't guess. At his shoot site, Pigman says he puts out corn, Monster Meal or some other bait to entice hogs to come in. His smelly attractant is deployed elsewhere though. When hog hunting it's important to know that smart mature hogs and big boars will generally circle the bait before descending upon it to check for any irregularities. Pigman takes his smelly bait and places it off to the side so that circling hogs will come in, check it out and get a little on their noses before heading to the main bait site. With the foul smell on their noses, hogs are then less likely to smell hunters within close proximity to the stand. Scent can be a hog hunter's number one nemesis. With one whiff hogs will bolt, so having a cover scent can greatly increase a hunter's chances of success.
Listen in as Pigman talks about a cover scent project he has in the works to help hog and deer hunters evade the incredible noses of the wild game they pursue. He'll also talk hunting with a pistol, the practice required to become a proficient handgun shooter, and why hunters should make sure their shot is on point at several different closer range distances. Watch "Pigman: the Series" on Sportsman Channel, Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET and on MyOutdoorTV. Also catch plenty of Pigman on Outdoor Channel's La'Boar' Day Marathon on Monday, September 7th beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
There is more than one way to catch a cat, if you know what you're doing!
CatDaddy is The Revolution's resident catfishing expert and this week he joins the boys to talk about the wild action coming from the beanhole right now. Fresh off of a very successful trip where he was able to catch monster cats on limb lines, CatDaddy says he went back to revisit the beanhole to see what kind of bites he could drum up. Although a cool front moved through that had the fish lethargic, CatDaddy says a few spoonfuls of beans to chum the water turned everything around and turned the action on. Within two hours his clients had caught their limit and had a great time.
Deer season 2020 is almost here and hunters across the country are ready to get out and fill the tags that are burning holes in their pockets. Jeff Danker is a certified big buck specialist and the host of "BuckVentures" on Sportsman Channel, Wednesdays at 9:30 pm ET. He is also the co-host of Deer Week, alongside country music artist Tyler Farr which begins September 14th on Sportsman Channel and Outdoor Channel. Listen in as he drops by to talk Deer Week, as well as fair chase hunting tactics and how trail cameras and baiting are being brought into that conversation.
A brand new season of "Nick's Wild Ride" is coming to Outdoor Channel, premiering Monday, September 7th, at 10:30 p.m. ET. Nick Hoffman is the host of this action packed hunting and adventure series and he joins The Revolution this week to talk hog hunting, his fall hunting season kickoff and a dream hunt that has been put on hold.
You don't get a name like, "CatDaddy", if it isn't earned! Not just anyone can hunt down monster catfish with consistent success and that's why he gets the legendary title of "CatDaddy". Recently, he spent several days fishing the Kansas River in search of big cats. "The Kaw", as it's known by locals, is a river of giants and for catfish anglers they know it's a great locale for monster bottom feeders. On his most recent weekend trip on the Kaw, CatDaddy says it more than lived up to its reputation for producing big cats.
Kenneth Lancaster is the co-host of "The Given Right", Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET on Sportsman Channel and he joins The Revolution this week to talk fall whitetail hunting prep and the impact of Coronavirus on fall hunting seasons. Listen in!
