There’s a distinct quality and uniqueness about a beard and the man that wears it. Is it the beards ruggedness and charm, that's so appealing, or is it because it can be grown free of charge? It's often said that a man who proudly owns his beard seemingly owns the world around him and I found this to be, unequivocally, true, every fall in the deer woods, when the hunters with beards were instantly branded as the alpha males in camp. Was this just a reminder of how God and nature intended man to be: confident, self-reliant and powerful?

Your hunt didn’t go so well? Or your trap line left you hanging? Eat some weeds. Seriously, eat ‘em. Some of these weeds were staple foods to our forebears, and some are even palatable. It’s true: beer can save your life. Even if you’re a tea-totaller – it’s hard to ignore the survival benefits a can of beer will provide. Drink it for hydration. Consume it for calories. And we’re not even done with it once the can is empty. You can use that handy hollow aluminum container to perform a host of self-reliant survival skills. Here are just a few.
Boiling Water The trick to boiling creek water in cans is to set the can next to the fire, in the ashes. Don’t place the can in the center of the fire, as the metal will start to break down. Boil for 10 full minutes to safely disinfect the water from bacteria, parasites and other pathogens.

According to a recent a study, 7.9 million Americans poop outside every year. Can you imagine conducting that research? Nonetheless, that's a lot of poop, and we've all had the misfortune of stumbling upon some waded up pieces of toilet paper along a trail. Yuck! So this crap storm got me thinking, poop causes both aesthetic and health problems and if it gets into our water sources, it can lead to diarrhea, giardia and some really raunchy diseases such as hepatitis. So let's examine poop disposal methods and ways we can minimize the chance of water pollution, the spread of disease and maximize decomposition.

Today’s Youth: They’re Not Lost - Just Forgotten - So Text Them!
The trend is unmistakable and hard to swallow: nature based recreation, such as hunting and fishing, is being replaced by electronics and the “Internet King,” Al Gore, is to blame. Well, partly, or at least he proclaims!
It began with the very first television which, subsequently, sunk in, took hold of our leisure time, and gave us the modern day sedentary athlete. By the way, that translates to…lazy ass! Fast forward to present times and wham-o, our lives are inundated with tablets, smartphones, something called a Wii and even my coffee pot, now, requires a USB cable.

Well, somewhere in-between our fight for political correctness, social equality and the advent of an all natural, 100% beef/soy hotdog, we forgot to include batteries. Am I making any sense? Sure. It’s called self expression, or a specific individuals take on life, and if you don’t get it, or belong to CrossFit, you’re anti-Semitic and support the Tea Party. Case in point, a highly respected outdoor writer, and dear friend of mine, urged me the other day to restrain myself from using the word “weapon" when describing a firearm because it places "negative connotations on an inanimate object.”
