Avoiding Diseases Carried by Wild Hogs

February 1, 2017

Hunters are field to table enthusiasts that enjoy being able to eat what they hunt and wild boar is no exception. Wild pigs are much leaner than their domesticated counterparts and many would argue, much more flavorful. While they make great table fare, they are also hosts to diseases and parasites that we, as consumers, want no part of. Tim MacWelch, Survivalist and New York Times best-selling author, says some areas are home to more disease carrying hogs than others.

He encourages hunters to check with local game wardens or wildlife and fisheries officers to establish what risks an area has. Even though hogs can carry diseases, Tim says that you can avoid health risks by using some simple and careful sanitation techniques when field dressing, butchering and cooking your meat. He’ll also take a look at other animals that hunters should use caution with, as well, like raccoons, rabbit and opossum.
