So fast forward 8 years or so and now my Polaris RANGER CREW XP 900-5 EPS fits the bill that my motorcycle used to, only it adds the “practical” and “safe” features…like seat belts. Great ventilation is a given with the POLARIS, straight from the factory there is no roof, no doors, no windshield and nothing to stop the flow of wind. For about 6-7 months out of the year wind is welcome, it keeps you cool on those hot summer days and it’s all just a part of the experience. However, when the fall chill comes and then winter blows in behind it a shield from that icy blast is welcome. I actually have a couple different windshields I use interchangeably to meet my needs throughout all the seasons.
Option 1: The RANGER® TIP-OUT GLASS WINDSHIELD BY POLARIS® is a great windshield to navigate the changing seasons. It offers the best of both worlds, full protection when it is in the down position as well as complete ventilation when you push it up and open. It’s an accessory truly worth the investment because with it there is nothing that can keep you from enjoying the great outdoors and your RANGER regardless of the weather you are experiencing. Early this spring, my wife and I spent days establishing a few new tree rows. We planted more than 100 trees and worked out of the back of our RANGER. Our kids all helped with this job and while planting, those inevitable spring rains started. When it’s only in the 60’s outside a surprise shower can cool things down quickly. The Tip-Out Windshield came in handy and afforded us the ability to keep planting while the kids found shelter under the roof and the windshield blocked out everything coming in from the dash and also kept the seats dry. When the showers ended we could pop open the windshield and let the breeze flow through again. We live in the middle of the corn belt and our neighbors on every side are crops: corn, wheat, soybeans, sunflowers, milo and more. With crops comes bugs. Have you ever taken a grasshopper to the forehead going 25 mph? Do you know what a June bug to the eye feels like? It temporarily blinds you and you contemplate whether or not you are going to have to forever wear a pirate style eye patch. Fact: hitting bugs while you cruise down the road at a good clip hurts! Fact: a windshield on your RANGER can save your eye! While I make light of it, bugs are an issue for us where we live, it can make a ride a really unpleasant experience. The Tip-Out windshield is great for this situation because it blocks oncoming bugs completely, however if they aren’t an issue that day you can tip the windshield up and still drive with it in the open position. The roof is mounted so it doesn’t obstruct windshield mounting, and it’s easily bolted onto the cab in designated mounting locations that make it simple and fool proof to install. Opening and closing the windshield is assisted by gas shocks and the glass provides the highest level of scratch resistance so you won’t have to worry about rocks thrown up from a gravel road or anything else hitting the windshield. It’s the best of both worlds.
Option 2: - RANGER LOCK & RIDE® PRO-FIT HALF WINDSHIELD BY POLARIS. Why spend your time or money on a half windshield? Doesn’t it make more sense to either have a full windshield or nothing at all? For me, the half windshield offers a happy medium between those two options. It still gives you substantial airflow and keeps you cool during the warm months but it also offers protection. The half windshield takes the brunt of the bugs that are flying right at you plus it protects you and your passengers from gravel, rocks and anything else that may kick up on the road or trail. Regardless of the terrain you are traversing, you don’t have to worry about mud or dirt obstructing your vision because you can see right over the top for an always clear view.
Purists will say that you need to suck it up and feel the wind in your face and the bugs in your teeth, but the truth is that sometimes comfort matters more than being macho. You don’t have to prove your brawn by taking the elements that mother nature throws at you at full speed. The different windshield offerings from Polaris provide different protection levels based on your need and allow you to make the most of your time outdoors, all year round.
