It might sound odd, but unbeknownst to them, and amidst the utter chaos, the father’s paternal bond with his daughter was instantly strengthened and she was reassured that her father would always be open and willing to listen. From the outside looking in, it was just another average fishing trip. However, what those nearby anglers failed to recognize, is that the priceless memories that this father and daughter just created, could never be duplicated or shared with others. In fact, the positive effects of this triumphant fishing expedition, would not only help mold her, one day, into a self-reliant independent woman, but it too would make him a better father, husband and friend. Perhaps it’s just an excuse, but it’s much easier for men to open up when we’re doing something side by side, and we can just let things unfold naturally as we cast a line.
I can clearly remember when my Dad taught me how-to rig my own pole. I’ll never forget how he beamed with pride as I ventured out to catch fish on my own, and I could see the sense of accomplishment in his eyes as I returned with a mess of fish on my stringer. Obviously I’ve gleaned what I could about fishing, hunting and life from his vast vast years of experience, and what it's taught me is that life is fleeting and there's no receipt for lost time. So this Father's Day, while you're being showered with gifts you may or may not want, like ugly ties, socks and coffee mugs, reciprocate and give the gift of your undivided attention. It's the best investment you'll ever make and the return will be, at least, a thousand fold.
P.S. In our house every fishing adventure is looked upon as the Bassmaster Classic and friendly wagers of juice boxes and candy bars are always made on the first catch or heaviest stringer. And this whole BS that every kid has to be a winner is stupid, because dammit, it's Father's Day and I reign supreme.
Hugs, Handshakes and Happy Father's Day.
