He’s the host of “Fishing with Roland Martin” airing on Sportsman Channel, Sundays at 4 pm ET and Wednesdays at 3:30 pm ET showing the viewers his secrets to landing big bass. Roland also has a YouTube channel where he posts how-to style videos several times every week with tips to make every day anglers more successful on the water. Listen in as Roland joins Jim and Trav this week to talk about his prolific bass fishing career, selecting the proper gear ratio in a reel, fishing technique, the Carolina Rig and much more.
Understanding your equipment and selecting the right gear for the situation at hand is important. Roland talks reels and gear ratios and how to identify the right reel for your fishing style. Are you primarily a bank fisherman or boat fisherman? What kind of lure are you fishing with and what does that specific lure require in the way of speed to perform properly? Roland highlights the different needs of bank fisherman who benefit from a stationary setup and can use a variety of different gear ratios for the lures they are using, versus the boat fisherman who not only have to consider their lure and presentation but also their ability to keep with the drift of the boat as they reel.
Beyond gear, Roland also discusses technique and his personal approach to pattern fishing. Pattern fishing, Roland says, is looking at a set of water and cover conditions and, based on those factors, determining how to best catch fish. Factors like time, water temperature, depth, and water clarity are important to identify and if you can find a particular pattern, then you can apply that same information to a different part of the lake, if the same conditions exist, in order to catch more fish. Patterns are fluid and anglers have to be able to pick up on those patterns throughout the day as they change. Roland says when looking for structure, some points are better than others. He explains how wind direction and current impact the productivity of points and he pinpoints the factors like current, proximity to deep water and isolation that will attract and concentrate fish.
