We’ve seen a lot of examples of this single-item survival strategy on Discovery’s hit show Naked and Afraid. Each person gets to bring one only item for their survival. Quite often - knives, machetes and fire starters are top picks among the chosen survivalists. Less expected items show up too, from magnifying lenses and cooking pots, to multi-tools and hatchets. Personally, I’d rather have the fire starter (particularly a lighter) than a cutting tool for a short term scenario. Even though I am very comfortable with friction fire starting techniques, the lighter is instant fire – even in wet conditions. And I’d gladly argue the point that it’s easier to make a functional cutting implement from nature than to make an entire and functional friction fire set from the wild. So I’ll take a good quality lighter any day.
What’s your pick if you only had one survival tool?
