There’s never a bad time to get outdoors and explore. There are 610 million acres of public land across the country and more than 100 million outdoor adventure seekers that look to those lands for a place to recreate. Public access is such an important issue as it affects the ability of citizens to get out and enjoy the outdoors in their individual pursuits of riding, camping, hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. Yamaha has spent the last decade supporting access with their Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative where they have awarded more than $3.5 million in funding to help improve access for safe and sustainable recreational use. Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV and Side-by-Side Group Marketing Manager, joins The Revolution this week to talk about the extensive efforts that Yamaha is putting forward to help benefit all outdoorsmen and women.
Most coyote hunters hang up their gear, put away their calls and put predator hunting on the back burner until late fall. However, if your goal is to manage coyotes to the benefit of other wildlife, then spring and summer hunting is a critical time to do so. This is the point in time when fawns, poults, and other prey animals tend to be the most vulnerable. However, this is also a vulnerable moment for coyotes, as well.
"Think of what hens do. Think of what turkeys do, and just take a second to slow it down if you're dealing with a pressured situation. Just use your woodsmanship, use your calling techniques, and use your ability to think like a turkey to be as real as you can, and I think it helps with success even on pressured turkeys." – Nate Hosie
There is nothing wrong with factory built, straight out of the box rifles – heck, our gun cabinet is stocked full of them. However, there is something to be said for either customizing an existing rifle to better suit your needs or getting a complete custom rifle where you can hand pick every detail. After all, no one hunter is the same. We don’t all pursue the same game animals, in the same terrain, under the same conditions. A custom rifle, or customizing an existing rifle, can really help a hunter dial in on their specific needs.

Spring is on its way boys and girls! It has been a long cold spell and if you are just as anxious as we are for the mercury to start rising, then it’s time to start preparing your wardrobe for it. As you may well know, as avid outdoorsmen and women, we have long been fans of CINCH Jeans. CINCH makes western apparel – jeans, shirts, boots and much more – that are designed to hold up to a very active, outdoor lifestyle. Jeans that don’t wear out easily and can handle a dust up with tree bark as you climb up to your treestand, boots that can withstand the elements and keep you comfortable even if you’re stalking game for miles on end, shirts that keep you cool in the heat of the summer, and even boxers that will make your skivvies the talk of the laundry room! It’s only natural that we share our love of this brand with you, fellow outdoor enthusiasts!

I found an old duffle bag in the bottom of my closet the other day.
It was buried under a mound of shoes and old clothing, and it had been there for over seven years. It was a “bug out” bag that we forgot about after moving into the home.

Winter ice storms can be a tricky natural hazard to navigate. At best, an ice storm leaves you cooped up in your home with all utilities operating normally. And when things go bad, the utilities are out, supplies are low, and you can’t even step out the door without slipping and busting your skull. This is the right kind of weather to cause you to hunker down and ride it out. But you’ll need some supplies for that. Here are some of the goodies you’ll want – before the next batch of icy weather hits your hometown.

If you are fortunate enough to live within the natural range of birch trees (the genus Betula), then you have a lot of interesting survival materials at your disposal. Birch can provide you with fire and containers; and the right species of birch can even make you a delicious tea and syrup.
For friction fire building with birch, you can use the dead and dry branches for your drill and fire board. These materials are effective, but not quite as easy to use as willow or cedar. By far, the best fire related use of birch comes when you burn the papery curls as your fire starter. This birch paper is like a stepping stone between tinder and kindling. Whether wet or dry, these birch bark curls will burn strong, creating a black oily smoke. Any birch species that produces papery bark will be useable, but the white birch (aka paper birch) is the most effective. You’ll need an open flame like a match or lighter for best results in lighting the bark. Spark based fire starting methods are not particularly effective for lighting the bark strips.
